Jigs and Fixtures

I have been busy steal… uh collecting ideas here, (thanks Dusty for the follow-up pictures of SS crosscut table), Scott’s My Growth Ring channel and various Pinterest channels,and then I bought some WoodAnchorTM nuts from ToolQuest. Based on Scott’s information that the accessory holes in the Mk500, Mk510 and centerline of the Mk520 tee nut fences were the same AND that the fence on my Craftsman table saw was the same size as the 500 and 510 I set out to make interchangeable jigs and fixtures. I drilled holes in the Craftsman fence, the 520 fence and the fence on my Harbor Freight sliding miter saw. I also have two SS Shaper fences that can be used on my SS Router Table or the router table mounted on my Craftsman table saw. Fences for the miter fences and shaper fences are different sizes.

Wow Larry, you have so much stuff going on there that I'm still trying to sort it all out! I have no hands-on experience with a Mk V 500, which no doubt is a handicap.

I think I've figured out what's going on with the long fence facings on the aux tables. By using the tops of them as runners for your crosscut sled, you can increase the crosscut capacity to pretty much whatever you want. Very clever!

I've been intending to make a 520 fence facing with extended infeed and outfeed supports, much like yours. But I had planned on fastening the supports permanently to the facing. What do you see as the advantage of making the supports removeable? Also, I'm curious as to whether you installed sliding-nut alignment pins on those removeable supports. I find that they make fixture setup much faster and easier.

On the shaper fence, I understand the split fence -- it's basically just a variant of the original one, but with a greater longitudinal adjustment range. But the vertical "facing" on the rear of the fence definitely had me scratching my head. Then I noticed that in one photo you had replaced the split fence with a solid one. Is all that so that you can use the shaper fence as a mount for sled runners? Maybe not -- I see that you also have a fixturing slot on that rear "facing".

Let me add "Nice Jigs!" I have thought about making an extended Fence Face for times I use the Floating Tables as infeed supports to keep materials straight as they are being fed to the Saw Blade. Hadn't considered using one as a Crosscut Sled Support. Should be more stable than using a second Front Table Extension on the Extension Table. Great idea for extending the original 500 Table System. A similar set up could be used for the Model 10E and 10ER. Again, the Shopsmith is only limited by our own imaginations.

That slot on the rear of the shaper fence has me scratching my head also unless it is merely being stored there until used ala not split fence.(????)

BTW crucial here is the addition of a second main table and carriage.

One concern re adjustment of the saw fence with all that 'stuff' surrounding the 'knob'. Quill to the rescue?

What do you see as the advantage of making the supports removeable? Mostly because I can adjust them to be used with any of my fences (I may have too many fences )and can use just the front or back ends as needed. So far I only use the outfeed support when using the Craftsman or Mk520 and use both front and back on the Mk500. I don’t currently have a use for the 510 fence, but you never know.


Also, I'm curious as to whether you installed sliding-nut alignment pins on those removeable supports. I find that they make fixture setup much faster and easier. Yes, very handy.

The solid fence is good for use as in auxiliary fence to span a dead zone when ripping between 4-1/2” and 7” on a Mk500. I don’t have much success clamping my fence across the main and auxiliary tables.

BTW crucial here is the addition of a second main table and carriage. Yep, leftover from one of my upgrades. It’s good to have a herd of Shopsmiths to draw from.

One concern re adjustment of the saw fence with all that 'stuff' surrounding the 'knob'. Quill to the rescue? So far I just slide the fence back far enough to access the knob but the quill would be good too if I get rid of the zero clearance insert.
