The reason I initially asked was because I do not know how one can effectively do so.

I believe field windings (in the Shopsmith motors) can be tested with just an ohmeter but the armature is another story. I believe special equipment is required. The start windings must be given special attention.

The issue with the windings is the extremely low dc resistances involved.
