Making Plans?

My Sister-In-Law wants me to build her a double wooden cover for 2 plastic kitchen trash containers. How would you go about designing it?

Is this going to be kept in the kitchen or outside? That answer wood make my answer to your question different in each case.

STEP ONE - Determine dimensions of trash containers.

In addition to the size, would like to know what the trash containers look like and the place where they will be kept. Does she want a pedal lift, or just a lift and peek? Will she allow you to snap a photo of her trash?
Do you get to do the whole container(s),or just the lids? How about a crate or frame to put the trash containers into?

Sheesh! The guy asks a simple question and do we give him a simple answer? NO! We inundate him with a bunch of more difficult questions for HIM to answer!:D

It's for inside, in the kitchen.
Don't know the dimensions of trash containers.
Don't know what they look like.
She's going to get a "you" lift the lid type.
I get to do the whole container.

O.K. Bob! No answer here, only concepts.-- Not necessarily good - but concepts, that can be reviewed by your Sister-in-law.
Can't help it, (sorry) but I keep thinking of a two hole privy. Each hole had a hinged lid on it. If the plastic trash containers have to fit under the sink, this concept wouldn't work at all. However if she would allow the trash containers to be contained in a small cabinet, you could use this concept.
The cabinet would have to allow both the insert of trash and the removal/replacement of the containers. In this concept, the box (cabinet) would have a full sized, hinged cover. This would allow removal/replacement of the plastic containers. In that cover, there would be two smaller hinged openings, over the top of the containers. These smaller openings would allow putting trash into the plastic.
The second concept would be to have a similar cabinet (box) this one would also have the two holes on the top, with hinged covers. The difference is the entire front would open to allow access to the plastic containers to slide in and out.

An Improvement for sure! However it does NOT allow for the following: 1) I changed my mind. 2)That is not what I imagined from your description. 3)Didn't you listen to me? 4)That is ugly! 5)Not in MY house. 6).....
