I received the replacement cutter head for my jointer today. Now I come to the end of the day with mixed emotions. No doubt, I needed a replacement.

But, somewhere I got the idea that this was going to be a plug and play operation. I expected the blades to be all set and once I got the cutter head reinstalled I would be in business. Not the case.

It is not a big deal but the blades all need to be reset. As received, they are at least an 1/8" below the height of the table when set at zero (infeed/outfeed in the same plane).

Wow, I am not looking forward to re-building my jointer. For now my dust shoot is in need of repair and low and behold a sale. I quickly looked up the dust shoot and shoot it is on backorder. It is getting easier now to count how many items are not on backorder. Anyway I sure hope you get the jointer going soon I know you are getting frustrated with this.

Thank you for the thought. Yes, anything that stands in the way of making saw dust or chips is frustrating even though I have no pressing project on the bench.

Do not fear the jointer rebuild. It really is a piece of cake. Remember, those knives are sharp and they will bite. I do have to perform a knife adjustment but that normally only takes about an hour.

I was just frustrated when I put that new cutter in place, leveled the tables and passed a board across the jointer and cut "nothing". A quick check shows the blades well below table surface.

Back orer, what's a back order? I have had six or seven orders filled in the last three months with no items being placed on BO. Hopefully this means that the whole mess is getting back to normal.

Perhaps you have NOT been ordering the RIGHT stuff!:D or Just stuff nobody else wants.

Perhaps but I don't think so. I believe Shopsmith has this problem on the run. Now I don't expect the nay sayers to fall in line with this thought process but then "the nay sayer" wouldn't.

Dusty, My friend, I tend to think JPG is the more correct on this one. I love your optimism - it's good for us. Just this week when calling Shopsmith, checking on a back ordered Strip Sander Sharpening System (on back order for only 2 months) found out there are 16 others waiting for the same part.

Glad you got your new cutter head quickly! When mine came it was truly a plug and play operation. Guess I was lucky on that one!

It is regretful that anyone has to wait more than a few days for an order to be filled. We have all gone through a period of time (with Shopsmith) when it was more likely that an order would become back order than it was to get delivered. I think those days were the direct result of financial conditions that are now more "under control" than before.

The "Strip Sander", while it has long been a Shopsmith product is not one of those items that comes to the top of the list of equipments most likely to be found in a work shop. At least it was not. The Sawdust Sessions and Nick's reintroduction to the market place may have changed that. I believe this has resulted in a surge of orders that Shopsmith just did not anticipate. There are probably several parts that are unique to the Strip Sander and these are likely the cause of the back order.

Now, having said that, I just hope that there is not a large number of other items that fall into this BO category. None of us need that, least of all Shopsmith.

After many months my order for a printed catolog has still gone unfilled.

I feel for us all! Since I got my SS5 in February and the "bug" with it, I have been ordering parts. I have parts in backorder since the first one.

I just got my conical disk without paper : )) and the 1/4" router arbor came yesterday, nicely Made in Taiwan.

I also got yesterday my Ebay jointer and the knives, which were on sale until a few days ago, went back to list price when all other jointer parts are now on sale. Go figure...

On the jointer, is there any easy gadget to align the knives? I saw Nick's but seems too complex for the task...
