I'm in the middle of a total tear down of my 510 to replace all of the bearings and have everything except the quill spring and locking shaft out. I followed the manual step by step but unfortunately did not read ahead and did not see the instruction not to lock the quill after removal. I re-watched Scott Markwood's video on removing the quill last night, well after I made the error. In it he explains that engaging the quill lock after the quill is removed will damage the headstock. How can I tell if I damaged the head stock? My hope is that I did not over tighten the lock and all is ok. Am I dreaming?

The quill shaft/pinion gear rests between two projections in the interior of the headstock casting. Tightening the quill lock a[[pies a squeezing force there and if the quill is not there to stop the squeeze those may crack. So it thee do nor see any cracks all should be well.

That said only a gorilla would tighten the quill lock enough to inflict that damage.

?Since you are likely to be removing that stuff, why did thee tighten the lock?

My arthritis hands no longer command a gorilla grip..
I reinspected the headstock and put the quill back in and it locks just fine. Looks like I dodged that bullet.

As JPG said if you don't see any cracks on the casting parts indicated by the arrows on either side of the Pinion Shaft you are ok.

Once the Quill has been removed from the Headstock the tension on the Quill Return Spring should be relieved by a controlled rotation of the Pinion. DO NOT simply let it go. That can damage the spring. There is no need to lock the Pinion to hold the Spring Tension when the Quill is out of the Headstock. When re-installing the Quill re-tension the spring.
