New Member starting Restoration

Thanks for letting me join.

About a month ago I got bit by the SS bug.

It started out with a 1984 Mark V close to home.
Then another 1984 Mark V close to work.

Then this is where it started getting out of hand.

I drove (4 Hours) to buy some attachments for sale.
Then 2 days later,
I drove to 500 miles (8 Hours) to get a 1981 Mark V.
That has a motor issue and a band saw with a Cast steel table.

Today I got a 50th anniversary mark V.
I glanced at the tag, and I cannot remember the exact year (2002-2003?)

I am going to start with a Restoration of the 1981 Mark V.

It is nasty inside.

There is an ebay seller that refurbishes speed control handles including replacing the cast aluminum gear with a steel one. It is a fairly popular option. Search "Shopsmith speed control"

The Bill Mayo headstock improvement modification for the speed control assembly is good reading and adds some robustness to the speed control. Yours looks like you caught it prior to serious damage. See: viewtopic.php?p=185690#p185690 fourth attached PDF.

I just got thru read about the Bill Mayo improvement.
I plan to make that improvement.

Both 510s and 520s use steel tubes to support floating tables. On 510s, those tubes fit within other steel tubes that are attached to the tables. On 520s however, the support tubes slip into bespoke aluminum extrusions on the tables. Also, the 520 rip fence is about twice the width of the 510 fence.

It is a 510(later version). Looks in good condition.

?? Was there a 520 "anniversary" version?

I think there was a goldie "anniversary" version.

Yes, there was/is a 50th Anniversary Mark V 520. I have one made in November 2001.

The 50th Anniversary edition Mark V began, if I remember correctly, in 2001 and continued for several years. I also have a 2006 50th Anniversary Mark V 505 like the one shown below although mine has been upgraded. All Mark Vs be it a 500, 505, 510 or 520 made during that time period have the 50th Anniversary plate. The Mark V 500, 505, 510 and 520 all have the same Headstock. It is the Table/Fence System it has that makes the difference between the models. The Mark V shown above in GetterDone's post is either a 505 or 510 depending on if it has the Floating Tables, Connector Tubes and Legs for the 510 or for the 505 does not.

For some reason the Goldie's have commonly been referred to as Anniversary editions but I do not know why. The color changed to the Goldie from Greenie paint after about 7 years so what Anniversary? The Shopsmith 5 in 1 Tool beginning with the Model 10E began in late 1947 so again what Anniversary at about 13 years? JPG do you know/remember anything about Goldies being an Anniversary edition when you bought yours?
