Looking for somebody who's done this; mounted a 4-jaw, self-centering wood lathe chuck onto their 10ER.

Lots of China stuff on eBay....not looking for that. Quill spindle is 5/8". If I have to buy an adapter that's OK.

Nova makes them and I believe SS sells them with the adapter. No guarantee they are not made in China however.

Kevin,

Since the Model 10ER has the same size 5/8" Reverse Tapered Spindle as the Mark series tools do, it will fit on the Model 10ER if it fits on the Mark series tools. I have the NOVA G3 Lathe Chuck, the same one Shopsmith sells, and I can use it on a Mark or a Model 10. It does need the adapter to fit on the 5/8" spindle which Shopsmith includes in their package. I recently bought a Model 10E that came with a NOVA Chuck that a previous owner had used for Lathe Turning. The Model 10's are popular for Wood Turning due to their heavier weight. You can also change pulleys on them to get slower speeds or get a Speed Changer which goes down to 425 RPM's.

Thanks, I'll check out the Nova! Have the speed changer.

What does it mean when they say the chuck is "reversible"?

With the proper adapter which allows it, rotation can be forwards(CCW) or reversed(CW).

The threads which attach the adapter to the chuck MUST be secured with a set screw(preferably with a pad to protect the adapter threads).

I bought a oneway with tommy bars for my 10er. They have SS adapter fits internal to chuck. When I moved up to PM3520 all I had to do was replace the internal adapter with one for 1 1/4 8. Still in use after 10 yrs.
Bough it direct from oneway manf.

The cheap 4-jaws on eBay are about $50-$65. I think my body/hands are worth more than that to me.

The aforementioned 4-jaws are around $200+. I'll save and get one of those. The SS ones come with an adapter in the 'kit'. The oneway is outa my league since my lathe turning will be occasional. I invented a safe way to gently polish old tools and the 4-jaw will work for that too.

Thanks guys!
