I am experienced on a metal lathe but New to a wood lathe.
So, I thought I would ask the experts before I pull the trigger.
I am looking at chucks for my Shopsmith Mark V.
I found this chuck and aluminum jaws on Amazon in the links below.
Is this a good starter chuck or should I bump up and get a Better one to start out with?

No. It won't attach to the Shop Smith without a special adapter. The Shop Smith needs a 5/8" plain adapter. And not all 5/8" adapters are the same. Nova has an adapter for their chucks made for the Shop Smith. The set screw is angled to match the flat on the spindle. I would not use a set screw with a cupped point, either, as it will damage the flat on the spindle. JMHO

I forgot to mention I plan to machine the adapter,
Something like this in the link:
https://shopsmith.com/product/shopsmith ... e-adapter/
I am glad you bought up about the taper.
That will help me remember to tilt the part 3% before I drill and tap for the setscrew.
Also, the setscrews, I think there is some at work with the ball bearing on the bottom.
Thanks for your help.

If you can find a set screw with a flat tip, that would give you the best contact with the flat on the spindle. Check the set screws used with any of the Shop Smith arbors. The Shop Smith help kit should have some, if you have it.
I have never seen that chuck, so I cannot comment on it's quality. If you do buy it, I am sure others would appreciate your feedback on it.

Thanks again for the advice.
I will review it If/when I get it.
I will check the spindle arbors I have to see what type of set screws Actually are in those.
If they have don't have them, I will replace them for sure.
Who knows what has been put in there over the years.
I have been watching My Growth Rings on U tube,
He suggested the help kit that you suggest also for the set screws.
I have not been able to find the part number or a Link.
Do you know the part number?

I recommend oval tip set screws. Not easy to find, but they eliminate the taper angle/set screw bore angle concern.
As for the chuck, it maybe a good starter, but not likely a keeper.
Tommy bars are a PITA.

McMaster Carr has those Thanks for the Tip . No pun intended.
What is a similar chuck that you would recommend?
I'm more of the buy once cry once type now.
But I don't like crying for long.
I just looked up tommy bars.

Nova G3 is a solid choice. Shopsmith sell a kit with this chuck and an adapter. Nova sell two versions -- a direct thread version (available in 1x8 and 1.25x8) and an insert version (uses an adapter to attach to whatever lathe you have). You want the insert version. The female thread in the chuck body is -- I think -- 1.5x8. You could make the insert, but simplest of course would be to just buy the chuck and insert together.
