12in stand mounted planer question

So, I recently acquired a stand alone 12 in shopsmith planer. It's not the pro planer. My question is simple; how would I go about converting it to mkv mounted? I know that'll seem odd, but the pulleys don't line up well, and I've perused the forums here and that solution seems like a lot of messing around with it, I've already tried aligning them, and the pulleys don't want to sit square across both pulleys in the vertical axis.

Also, if the cutterhead motor craps, I have to try and find another, where currently, I have 3 mkv headstocks that could power it if it was mkv mounted.

It has a Woodruff key for the cutterhead, and a flat. Can I just take the pulley off, key out and put a hub in, then mount it somehow? A lot of SS planer parts don't exist anymore, so I don't know how to proceed.

I also thought about mounting the planer and motor on a separate wooden stand and orienting them that way. But would prefer a mkv mount conversion.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Just take it off the stand, remove the pulley and add a hub and sit it on the MK V. You will have to make a couple of clamps to hold it to the way tubes. The original clamps do come up on EBay from time to time. You can make a pair out of wood 2 X 2's until you find originals. Or just use the fabricated ones and don't worry about the originals.

Awesome! Thank you. I'll see how that goes.

SShoarder87,

The Pro Planer and Mark Mount Planers are nearly identical in that they both use most of the same parts. The biggest difference is the table being Cast Iron for the Pro Planer and a Stainless-Steel covered Aluminum Table for the Mark Mount Planer. That is to reduce the weight of the Mark Mount. The Pro Planer is attached to its bench by two bolts coming up through the bench top and in the mounting holes that on the Mark Mount the clamps attach to. As John said it is a simple change to make. He also said the clamps do come up for sale from time to time used but not often. Shopsmith no longer lists the clamps (P/N 513356) for the Mark Mount Planer available in the parts catalog. The Speed Increase and Reducer use the same type of clamp setup called the Way Tube Clamp Assembly part number 516146 which are $22.95 each. I believe both the Planers and Speed Increaser and Reducer use a 3/8" thread. From the Speed Increaser Manual and parts list that assembly includes P/N 513743 the Handle with the threaded stud to screw into the bottom of the Planer. The Clamp, Handle and Bolt Retainer (P/N 513755) were listed separately in the Mark Mount parts list and as an assembly (P/N 516756) none of which are available under those part numbers.

The Cutter Head itself was changed to be universal between the two having a Keyed side for the pulley and a flat side the Coupler Hub.

Since your Planer is not an actual Pro Planer could the motor be aligned better to use it as is? Is it on a Shopsmith Power Stand or is it on another brand of stand. If on a Shopsmith Stand you should have some ability to better align the Motor Pulley to the Planer Pulley.
