I am refurbishing a drive shaft on a machine from the early 80s. Basically just cleaning it up and replacing the bearings. Just pulled off the old bearings using a HF 20 ton press, easy. It appears possible to remove the grooved|||||||spindle on the shaft where the PolyV belt engages the drive shaft. It has an allen head screw that goes through to the actual shaft and it is sandwiched between two snap wrings on the actual shaft. Can I remove the snap rings, and the allen head screw, and press it off? Should I? I am thinking I want to eliminate any rust under the spindle. Is it worth it? Am I risking damage to the drive shaft? Happy New Year Duckman

IIWM, I would remove the retaining rings, loosen the set screw THEN decide whether a press is needed.

Was there any rust under the Bearings? If not, it is unlikely there is any rust under the geared sleeve either.
