I’m new to Shopsmiths and I’m having an issue with reassembling a Mark V 500. I installed the lower saw guard and saw blade on the arbor. With the arbor fully seated against the quill and tightened it rubs the outside of the saw guard. Am I doing something wrong? If so any advice would great. I’m attaching two photos give an idea of what’s going on.

Welcome, and I think I know the answer to this one. After the Mark V 500 came other versions (505, 510, 520, etc.) with a larger table system and different "standard" arbors. Yours appears to be one of those longer arbors meant for the newer table systems, or possibly for a 5/8" blade. Russ Chapman has compiled a much fuller history of all of the various arbors which I will attach. Here are two pictures from that larger file.

Whether your saw blade has a 1-1/4" hole or a 5/8" hole will determine which arbor is right for your machine.

Your existing arbor COULD work IF you install the spacer for the lower guard that Shopsmith offered at the time. One of my post explains more about the spacer. I will add a link once I find it. EDIT: viewtopic.php?t=15437 NOTE: I found other posts where I linked what I think is the same post, but none of those worked (404, Page Not Found)

One advantage of using the correct arbor for your machine is that the blade will "automatically" be centered (more or less) in the table saw slot when installed and the carriage and headstock are properly located and spaced by the rubber bumper. With a little more attention to aligning the blade to the saw slot, and with the spacer noted above, your existing arbor WILL function.

It appears you are using the 5/8" Arbor part number 555118 which is for the other models of the Mark V. It is a bit longer as seen in my picture br549 posted above than the correct 5/8" Arbor for the Mark V 500 (Mark 5) which is P/N 555321. With the correct Arbor the Blade will be close to but not touching the side of the Lower Guard.

Something to note, Arbor 555118 has been discontinued and replaced by Arbor 555608 originally made for the SawSmith Table Saw.

Even though the 555118 has been replaced by 555608, I assume the 555118 is still okay to use on a 520? I have one of each and they are the same height but have a different size "body"...

You are correct.

After making the 555118 5/8" Arbor when the Mark V 510 was introduced Shopsmith decided they really didn't need to make two different 5/8" Arbors that have the Saw Blade spaced the same distance out. The 555608 5/8" Arbor was being made for the SawSmith Table Saw and became the 5/8" Arbor for the Marks with the larger Table System requiring the longer arbor. They could have just as easily kept the 555118 Arbor and discontinued 555608. 555608 is much different looking than the 5/8" Arbor made for the Mark V 500 with the original Table System so less likely to confuse the two.

Something to be aware of is there is an 1-1/4" Saw Blade Arbor 555572 that looks like 555608 but instead of a recess it has a raised center inside as seen below. 555572 is the one on the right. It was also made for the SawSmith Table Saw and has been discontinued.
