What is causing this sound?

I have a Mark V that makes a rattle sound at slower speeds, specifically near speed C. Any thoughts on what this could be? Here’s a YouTube video I took while running the Shopsmith at that speed.

ogijaoh,

Welcome to the Shopsmith Forum.

My first suggestion as to what is causing the noise would be the Motor Fan Sheave to Motor Spacer part number 504205 and reference number 124 in the parts diagram and list at the link below. The link is to the parts list and diagram here on the Shopsmith website.

This spacer can become worn if the set screw on the Motor Fan Sheave becomes loose. The Motor Fan Sheave is the fixed position Sheave on the Motor Shaft. It is keyed and held in place by a set screw and is spaced away from the Motor by the Motor Spacer. Once it becomes loose the spring pressure pushes the Sheave against the spacer and starts wearing it down. The problem will get worse as the spacer wears.

Check to see if the sound is coming from the Motor Fan Sheave rubbing against the Motor end. If this is not the problem, we can check for other possibilities.

I would check every screw on the belt cover and motor pan, including the ones securing the motor. If those are all tight look to see if a sewing machine fell into your headstock.
