The small spring behind the speed control came out when I removed the speed control assembly. How do I get the spring to stay in?
Thanks for any assistance.

Are you referring to the curved flat spring behind the knob? If so it should be secured with a screw.
Now if you are referring to that strange shaped mini spring, it fits into a groove and hole? at the top of the speed control cavity.

To show what JPG was referring to when he said,
Are you referring to the curved flat spring behind the knob? If so it should be secured with a screw.
That one is shown below and is held in place by one of the three Speed Control Assembly Mounting Screws.

JPG's second answer,

It just sits into the two holes seen below and is held in place behind the Speed Indicator Dial once the Speed Control Assembly is secured in place.

The Spring shown above is not found on "A" Headstocks from 1954 and 1955. Both Springs shown in the above pictures do serve a purpose. The one in the top picture provides a little friction to the Speed Control Handle to help keep the speed from drifting. The Spring in the lower picture provides an extra friction point behind the Speed Indicator Dial when moving into the high-speed range. On the "A" Headstock there is the High-Speed Lock attached to the Power Switch that must be pushed to go into the high-speed range.

No. The one I am talking about is part of the headstock behind the speed control assembly at the top. It is a wire piece with a short pin on one end and straight wire on the other that will fit into an opening in the headstock
