A-34 Jigsaw Mounting Bolt

Hello all,

I’m working to get my dad’s 10ER back in running condition and just got an A-34 jigsaw for it. Unfortunately it’s missing the mounting bolt and spacer. Does anyone know where I can find a bolt? I’ve had no luck searching eBay. The spacer I can live without unless they’re easy to find.

Thanks!

Akela9,

Welcome to the Shopsmith Forum.

The bolt is not a typical bolt as seen in the picture below with the Spacer.

The Spacer is used when the upper arm is removed for "Sabre" Saw cutting and can be easily made if needed. The Bolt is similar to the type used for a wheel axle on, for example, some lawn mowers. I have seen them come up for sale from time to time on ebay. Do use caution if buying one labeled as a "new" replacement. I have seen one where the dimensions were not the exact sizes as the OEM ones. If I recall correctly, it required the use of washers to make it work.

Something to note about the A-34 Jig Saw for the Model 10's is there were two versions. The difference is the Lower Frame Assembly casting, the Drive Housing Cover and the number of screws (4 vs 2) to hold the Drive Housing Cover on the Lower Frame Assembly.

Below is the first version of the A-34 Jig Saw.

It is easy to see the difference of the Lower Frame Assembly. The Spacer shown on the Jig Saw Mounting Bolt above is one I made.

I you have the first version of the Jig Saw I would recommend adding something inside the Lower Frame Assembly to block the Drive Housing area from the rest of the Lower Frame. Since it is open all the way through sawdust and other debris can get into the drive area and gum things up. The second version of the Jig Saw has the Lower Frame Assembly sealed off between the Drive Housing area and the rest of the lower frame.

Akela9,

Glad to hear you found a bolt.

Sometimes a washer is helpful in tightening down the Jig Saw to the Model 10 Headstock in the Belt Cover Mounting Bolt hole. That can vary slightly due to the adjustment set screws used for leveling the Jig Saw that are on either side of the Jig Saw Frame Mounting Bolt Hole. The Belt Cover Mounting Bolt Hole on the Headstock over the Drive Sleeve Assembly has a limited depth before it bottoms out against the Spacer between the Bearings of the Drive Sleeve Assembly. I know it's clear as mud.

Hopefully you have a manual for the Jig Saw and your Model 10.

Thanks again, Russ. That’s very helpful. I do have manuals for both the jigsaw and the Model 10. And the jigsaw is the early version.

In my first post here I mentioned that the early version of the A-34 Jig Saw has an open Lower Frame Assembly. The picture below is my early A-34 Jig Saw showing the openings in the Lower Frame Assembly and the Upper Frame (arm) as indicated by the arrows. The area under the oval is where the Lower Frame Assembly is open to the Drive Housing area. Because it is open dust and debris can get into the Drive Housing area. I have restored three of these early A-34 Jig Saws (and one waiting) which had dust and debris in the Drive Housing area. For anyone who has the early A-34 Jig Saw I highly recommend sealing the area to the right of the oval in the picture to seal off the Drive Housing area. The Drive Housing area is sealed off from the rest of the Lower Frame Assembly in the later version of the A-34 Jig Saw

By chance does anyone have a source for the slotted-head oval-point leveling set screws? I’ve scoured the internet and can’t find anything close.
