Speed Control Concern

I had the speed control wheel come loose. I realigned it and tightened the set screw. However, I went a little too far and broke the tip of the Allen wrench in the recessed hole. Any suggestions? What would be the worst-case scenario? I was thinking I might need to cut the cover plate and then use an extractor to get it out and then replace the assembly. Feels like a headache.

I am not sure what you are describing. Pictures would help. When you say "speed control wheel" do you mean the part labeled Speed Control Handle below?

You are a saint for responding. You can see the silver part that broke off in the set screw.

My first step would be to see if the combination of gravity and vibration may cause the Allen wrench piece to fall out. You'll get the most vibration at the highest speed, so try the highest speed available with the set screw opening pointed downward.

Since the Allen Wrench end broke off in the set screw it's a good bet it is pretty stuck in the set screw. I'm guessing the Allen Wrench broke off flush with the top of the set screw. You can try David's suggestion first. It's the less drastic approach. Next might be drilling out the Allen Wrench and set screw while it is still mounted on the Speed Control Assembly. Hopefully this can be done without damaging the threads on the Speed Control Handle. It may require cutting off the Handle around the center area to better get at the set screw. In that case damaging the threads in the Handle is of no concern. Cutting up the Speed Control Handle will require getting a replacement. Hopefully you can avoid damage to other parts.
Keep in mind most of the parts in the area you will be working around are cast aluminum.
