richardB,

I see this is the second time you have asked for in person help apparently without success. Back in 2012 was your first post. It appears there isn't anyone in your area able to help you get started in person. That being said there are many here that can guide you through posts. With that in mind and if you are willing to learn remotely, I can hopefully get you started.

My first question is do you have the Owner's Manual? That will be a great place to start by reading about your Shopsmith tool, its parts, nomenclature, and operation. It will guide you through setting it up, aligning it, using it and maintaining it. As you work through it ask any questions that may arise. Pictures to go with questions are helpful too.

Another helpful publication for the Shopsmith is the Self Study Guide also provided with new Mark Vs. It will take you through the different functions of the tool with different projects.

The third publication that is very helpful is the book Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone. It expands on different ways of using the Mark V.

With the knowledge gained from these publications you will be ready to use your Mark tool.

Something for us to know and be better able to help you is what model Mark you have. If you are not sure there is a topic I started in the Community Section titled Shopsmith Mark 5 What When and Where found at the link below. Not only will it help you identify which model your Mark is but provide you with important reasons for knowing when your Mark was made and if it has any upgrades.

I hope you will be inspired to learn about your Mark tool and allow us to help you remotely since there isn't anyone posting that they are able to help in person.
