Sharpening jig

Post by major_bob »

Have had my 520 for a couple of years, but only recently began turning thus the need to sharpen my lathe chisels. Can someone please help me with setting up the angles with the shopsmith sharpening jig (disk sander use). What angle should I be using for the skew and gouges ? How is that angle set on the jig? 0 degrees on the jig obviously isn't 0, perhaps 45 ?? If I set the jig to 20 degrees is that an off set from 45 and therefore 25 ?
Have consulted the shopsmith books and manuals, but still unclear what the "angle setting" charts are saying.

Any help is appreciated !

Yes, I have watched Nick's video and it is excellent for teaching the technique of using the jig, but no instruction on setting the jig angles other than referring to the chart.

Thanks Pat ! I think this may give me the answer to my question, or at least confirm my assumptions about the settings (i.e. zero degrees is 45)
