Im replacing the belts on the older mkv that has a gilmer belt , I ordered a set of belts and they came with a flat belt and a gilmer belt , the old belt has a Shopsmith name and part number but looks like a v belt ,before I continue on should this be a v belt ? thanks

, yes . it looks flat to me . the old one was a v belt or worn down to look like it . after looking at the pictures it may be a A model casting , it has the high speed lock on the switch.

My Greenie uses the same V-Belt (aka lower belt aka motor belt) as all other conventional headstocks. To the best of my knowledge a belt kit should have included a V-Belt and a Gilmer Belt. Like JPG, I'm not completely comfortable with the "flat belt" description so you might consider including a photo. Perhaps they sent you a PowerPro lower belt, which is Poly-V but could be described as flat.(?) Are there any markings on it?

The flat belt has a part #908-241-2885 interesting enough the new Gilmer belt has the same number . the old belt still has the mothership name and number. I think I will order v belt like the OEM belt .

That number is the phone number for Bandsaw Tire Warehouse. Coincidence?

Interesting . it just didnt look like the old belt to me . the old one is definitely a v belt .

Looking at BSTW's ebay store and searching for "belt" I saw 4400+ hits. These guys carry a lot of different belts. Without seeing a picture, I'm inclined to think they simply sent you the wrong belt. The mechanical speed control of the Mark 5/V consists of sheaves that adjust to vary the width and effective diameter to create the speed range. The only part of the belt that is in contact with the sheaves is the angled sides of the V-Belt. I don't see any possibility that a belt that doesn't look like a V-Belt could work.
This BSTW ebay ad for a Greenie belt set looks correct to me, includes a Gilmer belt and a V-Belt:
