Jointer blades

To adjust the jointer blades do you need to loosen the screws that hold the blades in, before turning the adjustment screws? Or do you just turn the adjustment screws?

If you want them to move OUT, it helps. Snug they should be so as to move with slight force applied when 'adjusting screws' are backed out. The wedges AND the blades are tapered so that slippage OUT is 'eliminated'(only works if wedge screws are tight).
