To adjust the jointer blades do you need to loosen the screws that hold the blades in, before turning the adjustment screws? Or do you just turn the adjustment screws?

If you want them to move OUT, it helps. Snug they should be so as to move with slight force applied when 'adjusting screws' are backed out. The wedges AND the blades are tapered so that slippage OUT is 'eliminated'(only works if wedge screws are tight). The height should be rechecked after wedge screws are tightened.

Make sure the blades do not slip horizontally(assuming they are correct).

P.S. If too snug, the blades will not move, and the tapered pieces will wedge. I guess 'almost snug' would be a better description. If adjusted out too much, the wedge screws may need to be loosened slightly.
