Headstock lock

Hail oh great and all knowing fellow users
I am putting small dents in my way tubes. I am not a gorilla or using anything other than fingers and thumb to turn it. It is now causing my carriage lock to not hold it's place. Any advice before I start tearing apart the headstock lock would be nice. Thanks Al

Hi,
In my early months with the Mark V I slightly dented my way tubes. I then learned that not a lot of turning-torque on the headstock lock is sufficient to hold the headstock well.
For 'repairing' your unit, you may not need to open the headstock. You can slightly loosen the retaining screws on the way-tube-ends, and rotate each way-tube to put those dents in a downward direction or otherwise where they don't ever 'catch' as you slide the headstock or carriage.

When I bought my 510 earlier this year it had a plethora of dents in top of the way tubes. When I discovered this (I'm a new SS owner & did not know what to look for), I was really distraught.
Then I did exactly as nuhobby said & just turned them 180˚ so all the dents were below.
It works great!

i did what someone else reccomended, i removed all the tubes, cut the long ones .5" (1/2")shorter than the short ones, and reassembled. works great.
