Can anybody shoot me a picture of how the 'Tie bar Shield' and it's thumbscrews are supposed to attach to my 500? I'm having the most horrible time trying to get mine together. Like a monkey doing a math puzzle....

Not sure what you're after.... but: The attached document shows a machine I worked on last winter (now at a buddy's house). The full 500-style saw-guard set comes with templates for drilling the necessary holes (and removing a little bit of material from the aluminum around one table-leg). In the attached photo I'm putting the lower guard up toward its holes in the tie-bar. In this case 2 screws attach it to the tie-bar. There are older versions out there where the 2 wing-nuts built into the tie-bar will fit through this lower plastic guard and secure it with a quarter-turn.

After looking at it one more time, I figured it out.
(Now I only need those quarter-turn screws and the template to drill the holes) Any suggestions?

You might be able to get the hole template from Shopsmith if you call them. As for the quarter-turn wing-nuts, I believe they don't supply that type of fastener with the 500-style saw-guard any more. Similar to their Bandsaw Cover, they have decided to use allen-head screws, probably to comply with recent safety regulations.
In the picture I showed, to make a long story short, I didn't actually tap screw holes. I had the wrong tap tool at the time. What I did was drill some chamfered holes in the tie-bar, and J-B-Weld (metal-suitable epoxy) a couple of nuts into the tie-bar. After the epoxy dried I filed it and painted it and I was happy enough.
