Just got a Mark V (510). I'm really excited to get started. I'm still clearing out space. I had an old tablesaw that gave up the ghost and since I'm in a tiny shop, it seemed that the shopsmith was a good way to go.

At any rate, I'm a tad confused on the table saw blades. I've got a dozen from my previous table saw. I'm to understand that I need to buy adapters to get these to work on the SS, right? So I just bought a couple off of ebay.

Here is the Q (assuming I didn't already do something stupid): I've got a dado blade set. Is this just a different adapter? http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/catalog/ms_molderdadoarbor.htm I can't use these other adapters for a dado blade? If I bought this Amana dado set from SS directly, do I still need an adapter? http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/catalog/ms_carbidedadostackedset.htm.


I know that these are basic questions, but I appreciate any help on this.

The adapters for table saw blades, while they have a 5/8 shaft, have a very limited grip range, not suitable for dado blades. They are designed that way to allow lots of clearance for dust collection and to allow a large stabilizer area to reduce blade vibration and noise.
The dado adapters have about a 2 inch screw shaft length to accommodate the grip washers and nut as well as about an inch of dado.

In addition to what Jim posted, you can only use the 5/8" and 1-1/4" saw arbors that are meant for the 505/510/520 table systems if you have a 510. Be careful to knot buy the 5/8" or 1-1/4" saw arbor that are for the 500. The arbor intended for the dado set, will fit with all Mark V's. And, finally, this dado arbor does knot come with the Amana dado set; you still will have to buy it seperately.

Two more cents:
An oddity-- the arbor said to be for Dado blade use (505506) was once shipped as a "Universal" use arbor, but it came with a 5/8" spacer and 3/16" washers, rather than the 3/4" spacer and washers listed with the "new" Dado arbor. It's the one I've been using for years with my Forest blade and plate stabilizer.
Oddly enough, the Dado arbor now says not for regular blade use

I have no idea why.

Hi discordian! Since you had a number of questions about arbors - - Here's a way to avoid any additional mistakes.

Phone Shopsmith - 1-800-543-7586. You'll likely have to wait 15 minutes or so for one of their consultants to answer. Don't be put off if a female answers, they are VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE!

Ask all of your questions, the folks at Shopsmith are very helpful and will direct you to the best way to solve your problems.

There are several folks on the Forum from the St. Louis area. Maybe you can contact some local help through the Forum.

I ordered the dado blade set and the arbor specified even though I have two "Universal" arbors P/n 505506 (one for my Forest blade +stabilizer, one for the Vermont/American wobbler- or should I say gobbler).
The same p/n now describes the arbor set as having a 3/4 spacer, and mine have 5/8, so I'll do the right thing and make a dado set to specs. Besides, I can always use another arbor.
But in investigating the ones I have I noticed an odd thing: the two 505506's have slightly different shapes. One has a 1" diam body and the other's body is
1-1/4".
My SS blades are mounted on the 555130 arbors, of course, and then I noticed there's one arbor I am missing-- the 555608-- which is the 510/520 single blade 5/8 unit. Have no use for it.

By the way, I still have my old 1-1/4 505511 500 arbor, if anybody needs or wants one (for $postage).

Nor will you UNLESS you get a 'single' blade with a5/8" arbor hole.

My saw blades all have 5/8" holes. Is that the norm for a contractor saw? I've been using this on a 1960 craftsman for years.

I really only use a few blades. I can't live without my plywood blade. And right now, my dado is out in the cold until I get the right SS arbor for it. I know I can buy it online at SS. I was hoping it was cheaper on ebay, but the truth is that it sells for about the same as list price.

5/8" is pretty standard. It is an oddity, but there are some things, that are available directly from SS, that are more expensive on e-bay then new from SS. Seems like there are people out there that do knot bother to check things out...
