New guy here with a question and...

I bought a Shopsmith in 1980, new. My saw blade recently started binding. The spindle that the sawblade attaches to has about 3/32" play in and out.
I would like to repair it on my own, and while searching for a repair manual to no avail, I discovered the DVD offer. So I would like to know if anyone has purchased the Mark Engler DVD maintenance and repair set, and whether they felt it gave complete troubleshooting and repair information for my problem.
Or if anyone has any other suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

Tom, I don't kow where you are posting from (city or state). You can look up Jacob Anderson in Virginia. He has listings on ebay. He knows SS inside and out. I think he even made some help videos.

Take the arbor off and clean it up, along with the area where it sits on the blade. Does the arbor stay tight on the spindle? Might need to replace the set screw. If your talking about the quill spindle, you may need a new one, that would be a 2 bearing quill vs a single bearing quill that you have now.

Sounds like the knurled collar between the shaft and the quill barrell has come loose/shifted. Loosen the set screw(you may have to clean out the putty/whatever they filled the hex hole with). Pull out on the shaft. Push the collar on snugly. Tighten the collar set screw. The in/out play should be GONE(or at least minimized)! Note that the set screw fits into a second tapered flat on the shaft and you need to 'rock' it into the bottom of the flat like putting anything onto the quill shaft.t

I would like to thank Navycop, beeg and JPG for the quick replies...as this was my first question on any forum. JPG, kudos! You called it and I now only have 1/64" in and out play. I never had a clue that there was a set screw sitting under there. Navycop, I'm keeping the name of that expert handy. Thanks again guys, it's much appreciated. Tom
