Mark V quill maintenance

Need some assistance servicing the Mark V single bearing quill.

Clean and wax it. You have a problem with the quill?

I bought a second Shopsmith Mark V and the quill will only extend about an inch. I think the teeth might be gummed up with dust. I've got the back cover off the headstock, but that doesn't give me acces to the quill internally.

Access it through the rear of the headstock. Use a brass brush to clean the quill teeth and the rack teeth. Look here at about 12 minutes in or session #22.

To really see/access the quill 'gears, drop the motor/pan(5 screws), disconnect the switch wires(note which wire goes where) and tilt the ss to vertical and 'all will be revealed to you'. Be careful, the motor/pan be heavy.

The quill feed may be binding(BTW the quill stop isn't set to about 1" is it?).

I had a very similar problem with a greenie. You should be able to see the gears through the name plate access hole. You should be able to reach in with a wire brush and clear out the impacted sawdust.

MAKE SURE THE MACHINE IS UNPLUGGED!
