Having just recently purchased a used SS in good condition, I've been reading a lot. I've heard about making sure that the sheaves are oiled, but I'm not sure how to do that. Do I just open the access portal and put in some 3 in 1?
I know these are n00b questions, but I can't help it.

The only thing I'll add is that SS now recommends 5/6 drops of oil. Lubee the pork chop while your in there also.
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

Excellant idea. I always recommend that any Shopsmith information, procedures and instructions that can be downloaded be copied to your computer and to a CD or DVD for backup. Many times in the past, this information on a web site has become deleted/lost for many different reasons.JPG40504 wrote:Why not just download it!
I recommend 6-8 drops of oil in the Control Sheave in 2 steps. 3-4 drops and turn the motor on, cycle the speed control handle from FAST to SLOW and back to FAST and repeat for the next 3-4 drops of oil. I put 3-4 drops of oil in the Floating Sheave and 1-2 drops of oil on the key that is exposed on the motor shaft when doing the first oiling of the Control Sheave.
