I had alluded to this in another thread and now that I bought it I figured I'd better make it official.

I now own a Model 10 in addition to my Mark V Greenie. And it has a 4E jointer, Serial # 4051.

It's pretty clean. No rust on the way tubes. But it had been in drill press mode for a while and we had to use a mallet and the carriage as a wrench to get the headstock off.

The headstock has been modified. A light was attached to the back of it. On the front, there is a big Allen Bradley Start Stop switch that covers the access hole. It looks like the name plate is missing, so we may never know the serial number. The motor is a A.O. Smith 1/2 hp. and looks to be original. The pulley for the jointer does not. Oh, it has a key switch, but the contacts are touchy. They probably need cleaning. I understand this was an extra cost option.

I'm in a quandary. I've heard the 10's are prized by some for lathe work because they weigh more. I also have a jointer for my Mark V and don't really need another one ( Man, are you guys going to hassle me on that!!! ) I've also been told I could sell the jointer alone for more than I paid for everything because they are rare.

We'll see. It was a late pickup. It's now in pieces in the van. Oh, and to sweeten the deal, I got 8 saw blades with it. So we'll see. No legs or bench so I get to be creative.

Yes, you got a real bargain. You have the 4 major parts (joiner, motor pulley, swing plate and headrest) for a complete 10ER 4E joiner which is worth more than you paid for everything.

I'm guessing because I have the pulley shield on top that this is a ER. But how do you tell the difference between a sand cast and a die cast part?

I do not think the cast iron headstocks(Model 10...) came in a die cast version. Die cast headstocks started with the aluminum Mark 5s after some were initially made by sand casting.

The serial number might be stamped into the headstock below where the logo plate would be. The newer of my two ER's has the SN stamped there, but the older one does not.

I'll take a look below the hole once I remove the Allan Bradley switch.

I may have to invest in some CastAlloy to fill in the extra modification holes in order to bring it back to normal.
