belt sander disassembly

I need to find out the correct way (most efficient, quickest) to disassemble my 6"x48" belt sander to replace the drive drum sleeve. Can't find anything in my owner's manual or anywhere else. Any ideas as to where to look? I know I can just dig in and get it done, but I don't want to do more dismantling than is actually necessary. Any help as to where to find instructions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Gary Rose

Welcome to the Forum Gary. Glad to have you join. I can't add anything to Nicks Sawdust Session other than good luck with your repair.:)

I replaced the drum sleeve a couple weeks ago - followed the video and had no real problems. Took maybe an hour or so.

Hello, I recently purchased a second-hand shopsmith off line and it came with a belt sander that was seized up. I disassembled it but I'm having an issue putting back the idler drum innards in the right order and orientation. Would one of you be kind enough to either send a picture or lead me in the right direction as to how to reassemble the idler drum? Thank you.

'innards' can get difficult! I settled for lubing etc.

I know it is an older thread that you re-opened and James gave you some great links. Earlier this year in the bearing guide I was writing I re-did the illustrated parts list for the Belt-Sander.

You may find this exploded view easier to visualize than the on-line parts list. I hope it helps.

Also in the Shopsmith Bearing Guide that you will find in a Link titled My Google Drive, I have a discussion on the belt sander. see https://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/view ... 90#p185690

In Nick's video, pay attention to the part he states "Do not disassemble" the tension spring assembly. Very important... Area of Item 46

If I am not mistaken, that's what you disassembled. The video will explain the issue.

Kindest Regards, and Welcome....
