Does anyone know of an alternate 1"x8tpi chuck adapter other than the Penn state adapter? I'd like to get the chuck over the spindle instead of hanging off the end.

Not sure what you mean by "get the chuck over the spindle instead of hanging off the end". Can you clarify?

Sure. The Penn State adapter is a sleeve that fits over the shopsmih spindle and secures with a set screw just like all other shopsmith attachments. The threads for the chuck begin after the sleeve and extend beyond the tip of the spindle about an inch.

I'm hunting for an adapter that has the 1-8 threads beginning over the sleeve so that the weight of the chuck is over/on the arbor vice hanging off it.

I doubt that you'll find one. That wood require the set screw to be in the middle of the adapter threads.

A set scew amongst the threads isn't unheard of, I think the problem is to go from 5/8" plain on the SS to 1"x8tpi, you would have less that 3/16 of metal to grab the setscrew and that also might be too thin to be strong enough for chuck use. Does the barracuda offer a 5/8 plain mounting option? Many chucks do such as OneWay and Nova. (If you haven't bought the barracuda yet, check out the Nova on sale at Woodcraft this month!)

My question would be: why are wanting to put the chuck over the quill shaft? Do you need more length for the lathe item. Are you concerned about the quill bearing wearing quickly from the weight? There are many lathe turners who put large heavy bowls on these extended chucks all the time without any known problems.

I have heavy metal work type 3 and 4 jaw chucks that extend beyond the quill shaft and I can still do very close work with them. Of course, I did machined the quill housing and shaft of a single bearing quill to accept a second bearing behind the first bearing and used 2 C1 grade bearings. The quill shaft still has no side play after many hours of use.

The current adapter seems to have to much slop and results in the chuck vibrating and wobbleing too much. It may improve with a dual set screw ala router bit chucks for the shopsmith, but right now it exacerbates my occassional catches (like all the time). I've bought some bolts and am going to see if I can machine what i'm looking for.

I have no first hand knowledge but on another forum I have heard the Barracuda chuck has had some issues with out of balance.
Are you sure it is the adapter?

I have the penn state adapter and I found it to be less then wonderful. I had discussions with penn state about it and got no satisfaction from them... my problem was with the set screw and choice of fit... I even took my personal time to figure out the correct specifications... but so far as I know they never fix the problem and I never purchased their chuck. If you do a search here you might find my postings on the subject if you are interested.

In addition to that issue I was advised by several other turners of then having returned there penn state chucks do to the problems you are having. Once in a while you get a good one but one guy I think got three replacements before he gave up and looked else where. That discussion was over at the ssug.org site and you might be able to find it there.

I finally went with the nova chuck and despite some quality issues with some burrs left on parts I have been happy with that chuck. Most of the chucks I looked at have adapters for shopsmith and the adapter have the setscrew within the confines of the chuck.

I'm not a big turner, nor do I do a lot of it but I did depend on some fellow shopsmith owners when I made my choice and I'm glad I listen to them.

Please don't get me wrong I'm not bashing penn state and I do own certain items from them but the shopsmith to 1-1/8 adapter is not a part that I was happy with nor can I recommend anyone get that adapter. There is another company that has a made in the USA version that sells for about $56 that I understand is much better made and is on my "to buy sometime" list. The bad news is I am hundreds of miles from home and I don't recall the company.... Perhaps someone else here can provide that???

I have the same chuck and adapter and have experienced that same slop and at times vibration, especially when trying to do some hollow forms. However, I didn't notice it causing any wobble.

I was finally able to get rid of the worst of the vibration by putting a thick rubber washer on the adapter and then wrapping several turns of teflon plumbers tape around the thread. I still get a little vibration at times, but nothing like before, probably need more teflon tape or something better/thicker on the threads.
