Patio rocking chair plans?

Post by soggysawdust »

Has anyone ever come across a decent set of plans for a patio rocking chair? I am trying to find something other than Adirondack chair plans and would kind of prefer a rustic type of design. I have some great local cedar that I bought a few months ago and I would like to use it for this project.

Any help will be appreciated,

Thanks - Phil

I don't have plans, but I have made several of these. I looked around for a chair that I liked and then used it as a model for the others. I happened to find the model at a moving sale, but there are some that you can get retail that are pretty cheap. I took it apart as far as I could with out tearing it up to much then took dimensions off the parts or transfered outlines onto masonite for the rockers, arms and other curved parts. I modified the plans, replacing 3/4 stock with 1 1/2 and 5/8 with 3/4. It made for a better chair. This worked well for me.

Getting close but no cigar quite yet. I have seen most of those plans and for some reason they just don't quite do it for me.

Thanks for trying - Phil

Thanks, I think the first one in the list may just be the one for me. I had not seen that design before and it appears to be the one I was looking for.

Just got this plan in today (http://cgi.ebay.com/ROCKING-CHAIR-PL...115169003r8684) and it sure looks good so far. Fifty one pages of full size plans and I am most anxious to get started on this one. Probably going to have to wait until after Christmas due to work. I will hopefully get some pictures along the way.

Congratulations, Phil! Glad you got what you wanted. Did you say "full size" as in trace-them-right-on-to-the-wood patterns? I hope that you make copies to use and keep the originals un-harmed. Looking forward to those pictures!

The patterns are cut and paste of anywhere from 1 to 5 pages and I will for sure make copies before I cut them out. Very well done pattern and some color photo's to boot. I can't wait to start making some sawdust on this one. The only minor problem I can see is making some square dowels with tapered and rounded ends, I have never done anything quite like that before.
