Puzzle for Grandkids

Just finished the puzzle for the twins. They are just 9 months, so it will be a couple of months before they enjoy. The space below each letter or number is painted the same color as the appropriate piece, and the colors are different for each puzzle. Although simple, making this project while using the walker and wheelchair gives me a whole new appreciation for those who must live their lives with such restrictions.
The paint is non-toxic milk paint with a shellac coat.
The letters and number were cut from 1/4 inch baltic ply, and the puzzle base is two layers of 1/4 baltic ply. The pieces sit on 1/2 inch maple blocks.

Did you cut the holes (for the letters and numbers) first, or did you cut the maple blocks first?? I am just curious to know how you got them to line up.

I used two copies of the pattern. I cut the numbers with one pattern, I then trace a shape over the second pattern and use that for the blocks. I then trace around the blocks to make the base.
