I translate that as "ã??‰??@??‚??Å??Ã??É??Z"

Interestingly I was at first stumped I was trying to figure what it said in machine language. I was seeing machine language commands.

When I was into this stuff I never translated for hex to decimal it simply stayed in it. I often caught myself counting my change in hex.

Sorry I haven't been following the thread. I have a hard enough time talking in English. Remember when you are parents how you would spell words so the kids didn't know what you were saying? Well my kids had to tell me what their mother had just spelled. For some reason my mind doesn't assemble stuff correctly. If you spell something to me unless I write down the letters there is better than a 50 50 chance I will get it wrong. Now imagine me with morse code. The FCC had two words for me. Get Out.

Don't remember what EBCDIC stands for, but if I still had my IBM "Green Card" I could tell you.:(

Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code
We called it Binary Coded Decimal.

No I didn't count 1, 5, A, 19 but I did count 5, A, F, 14, 19, 1E and etc.
I could add, subtract, multiply and divide in hex. Today I use my trusted calculator which has decimal, binary, octal, and hex and costs $9. Go figure.

But what is most familar is D0 20 009C 50 which is command language to read an 80 bytes into storage location 009C. I first learned to dial that into a machine console 42 years ago to exercise the card reader.

"Binary coded decimal" has the values 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 only and is 4 bits per 'number' It was embeded in the ebcdic by using the 'Fx' portion up to F9.

The rest of the world used ascii!

So re D0 20 which is read and which is what? since 009C is where and 50 is how many.
