Informaation about Shopsmith Mark VII

I bought a Shopsmith on auction and not realizing that a Mark VII is not considered a real Shopsmith. It is somewhat incomplete, mainly the variable drive system. I understand from some searching that any repairs are hard to find. I need suggestions as to how to proceed. Will any Shopsmith parts for variable speed work on the Mark VII?

If I remember correctly, a Mk V headstock will not fit on a Mk VII.

If you remove the plastic rack on the front way tube, the Mark V headstock will fit. The Mark VII way tubes are the same size as the Mark V 1.75" OD.

Though I don't own one, from all I have seen on the forums, the Mark VII is just as much a "real Shopsmith" as the 10ERs, the Brownies and the Greenies. While there are some things that need to be resolved to make yours run well, I believe I have seen a lot of discussion about how to fix and repair them enough to get one working. Just M2CW.

Real is in the eyes of the beholder! Since there have been several different corporate entities building shopsmith products over the past half century (+) I do not think that only the 'current' producer makes 'real' ones!
