Hi all... I just purchased a used Mark 5 and am very excited to start using it. I've been on the shomsmith website trying to plug-in my serial number to their year of manufacture site and have not had any luck. My machine didn't come with any instructions and although I'd like to just turn it on and start playing with stuff, I probably better get a users manual first.
Does anyone know what year 47198 was manufactured?
Does anyone have an electronic copy of the Mark 5 instructions that I could look over? Thanks.
Chris

I went to the SS Web Page and it looks like your machine was made sometime in Nov of 1979 if I interpretted the information correctly. Below are some places you can go to for maybe some of the information you are looking for. Hope this helps you and enjoy your machine.

Hi,
In the date chart they show Nov of 1979 as 46761 and Dec as 48722...
I would give shopsmith a call and I'm sure they will have a manual for you.
You might also want to get the book Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone sometimes called the shopsmith bible or PTWFE.
Since the machine is new to you it would be a good idea to look over the maintenance area and get the inside/out cleaned, lubed, aligned and waxed before much else. (You really need a manual to do this correctly.)

Trying to determine year for ordering manual
I would say that your machine was born in Nov/Dec 1979. Here is why:

Online maintenance manuals are not currently available but they would normally be here:
http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/productmanuals.htm
You may find some help here:
http://www.songofthegreatlakes.com/shopsmith.htm
Hope this helps. Keep watching the owners site (first one above); I believe the maintenace manuals will again be available here; I think they are being updated.
There are some maintenance videos available here but there is an enrollment fee:

If you have specific questions, this forum will be able to give you answers.
What you want to do, before using your machine, is clean and lubricate. Browse through the contents of this forum and you will find information required to do that. Here are a couple that come to mind:

Check out the "search" function of this forum. It will help you get to data without reading everything. In time, you will have read everything and you only need the search function to find something that you just "know you have read somewhere".
