Interesting to see Norm using much simpler tools, including a Shopsmith! He also makes a couple of mortise cuts that I think are very unsafe. Definitely fun to watch though.

I love it. Those were the good ole days. A woodworker working the way he really did it. Complete with a couple safety hazards and no safety glasses or power tool safety warning. Did you see those free hand cheek cuts on the through mortise.

This was certainly recorded BEFORE Norm began accumulating his vast collection of Delta Routers.

I would of rounded over the door frame first before doing grooves for mirror. Thus not needing the filler strips. Also would a dovetail saw (not sure of name) worked for trimming the dowels? Then you could sand thewhole thing at once.

Just finished watching the video. Norm sure had some well used tools in this episode. Good to see the Shopsmith used for drilling and sanding. I use a Japanese flush cutting saw to trim any dowels on a flush surface but not sure if they were popular or available when this was filmed. What a difference in the tools and equipment in this episode compared to his later ones. Thanks for sharing this information.

It's hard to argue with the fact that Norm is a great instructor, his presentations are enjoyable and easy to follow.
He does have a bit of a lax attitude toward saw safety. Guess he has been lucky as he still has all the fingers.
Personally, I would shape everything and mount the mirror last. I have broken too many mirrors to do it any other way.
But I loved the video and have marked the site for weekly review.

Is there a way to save the videos to a separate file?

That's the norm I cut my teeth on, Using tools every one of us has in their shop. I stopped watching when he got more commercialized. How many of us have multiple routers each set up with different bits ready to go. I understand it was for the taping of the show, but really the earlier shows had a more down to earth feeling to them. It was really refreshing to see the earlier shows I went and pulled out my book " The New Yankee Workshop" and there were many pictures of Norm using his Shopsmith and Lathe duplicator for drilling sanding and turning. Judging by the look of the throat plate Norm's SS got a lot of use, Bet he still has it hiding some where in the shop.

In show 103 Drop Leaf Table Norm will use the Lathe Duplicator to turn the legs and the SS Mortising Attachment to cut the mortises in the legs. It was interesting looking through the book, it seems he also had a Belt Sander on a power stand and a Mk v mounted Bandsaw.
