'Abor Day'

Picked up a new to me 10E last Monday with a few 'extras'. Spent a good deal of time Sunday 'cleaning up' the arbors.

Here is 'b4'.

A 'few' rare nuts!:D The drum sander is Craftsman - do not know what the other 'long' one is. The arbors with the smaller size(thickness) nuts(upper right in pix) are non-SS. They have thinner wall on 5/8" bore end and two slotted set screws(probably craftsman also???).

Forgive me my ignorance, but are all these "craftsman" references Sears "Craftsman" or did SS once use the moniker on some of their accessories?

The cleaned up really well! What technique did you use? I have some that look like your before picture and am thinking of use a wire brush wheel on a drill.

They sure do look a lot happier in the after pics!!
Do the 6 threaded arbors (3x2) in the upper right all have the 1/2"-24 nut?

Nut trivia - 3 basic 'full strength' nut designs, hex, hex thick, heavy hex. Their widths (officially designated in specs as 'thickness' are .875 x major thread dia. for hex , and 1 x major thread dia. for the hex thick and heavy hex. Also, when tightned, the first three nut threads carry a majority of the load.....who cares......me......my job makes me. :D

ALL the arbor nuts are 1/2-24(except the 5/8" arbor(lower right))! First three thread stress explains the inadvisability of using 'panel nuts'.

My reference to 'craftsman' is indeed 'Sears(aka K Mart)'.

Technique - depends upon degree of rust. Those with significant rust were soaked in Evaporust a couple of hours and wiped off. All were wire brushed(steel)(using a shopsmith) followed by 220 grit and then 600 grit sandpaper. Final step was application of 'paste wax'. I use minwax 'finishing wax' for this application, because it is 'firmer which allows a thinner coating, AND I have some which was purchased by mistake(it HAS a yellow can with red stuff) and I am too 'frugal' to throw it out!

FWIW Also included with the 10E acquisition was a 4" brass wire wheel and an 8 (EIGHT) inch steel wire wheel. Did not use them for this task, but they shall be used forthwith! The 8" really gets the job done!!!! The brass polishes nicely. Also came with a felt wheel(obviously not used properly) and a 8" fiber brush wheel(That explains 4 of the arbors!).

I did notice these older arbors seemed to have significant runout. I think the 5/8" bores are sloppy.

P.S. The 'nuts' were what I would refer to as a machine shop grade(They are made from very hard steel and have a definite front/back. The 'front' has a clearly defined bearing area and only rounded tips(hex corners) on the 'back'. Also the thrust washers were 'hard' steel(they were ground to shape/dimension. They were all 'stepped' washers(recessed around the hole).

'Discovered' another arbor today. It is of interest since it is a 'different' version.
