Everything E / ER - Technical info, documentation, links

Post by mickyd »

Update 6-03-2021: Cleaned up all the bad links from a decade ago.

With the volume of various threads and posts related to technical info on the E / ER machines, I saw it fitting to start a thread that can compile E / ER related information in one place. It will either contain the info directly or link out to appropriate areas. Informational commentary and dialog is welcome. To keep the thread on topic may be difficult. We'll see how this works.

Due to the ravages of time, many of the links that Mickyd compiled above are no longer current, this is an up to date list that I put together. :)

    Shopsmith 10E & 10ER Resources

    The Shopsmith 10E (10Experimental) and later 10ER (10Experimental Revised)
was invented by Dr. Hans Goldschmidt after WW2. They were manufactured from
late 1947 until the Mark V was introduced in 1954.

Everett Davis has done a lot of excellent work restoring and enhancing Shopsmith
documentation. These are available on his Google Drive (to access these files,
click the link below, then in the first post click on the red “My Google Drive”)
    https://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/main ... 16113.html

Then open the folder “10E & 10ER MAGNA”
You can download a restored manual for the 10E and/or 10ER but be sure to also
get the “Preliminary MAGNA Shopsmith Manual Restored” as well. Everett has
added a large amount of material to this file covering changes the were made
over the course of production, and the the history of these great machines. Well
    worth a read.

While you are there you will also want to click on the folder “PTWFE 10ER 1953”
and download the file. This is an restored and enhanced digital copy of the first
edition of Power Tool Woodworking For Everyone by R. J. DeCristoforo. This book
was written to illustrate how to use all the functions of the 10E/ER, later editions
    feature the Mark V.

    Other sources for documentation are:

    - VintageMachinery.org under Magna Engineering
    http://vintagemachinery.org/mfgIndex/de ... =338&tab=3

    - Geoffrey Baker’s web page
    http://www.lhdigest.com/SS/PDFsearch.cfm

Parts and information on mods are available on Skip Campbell’s MKCtools web page.
    http://www.mkctools.com/index.html

Parts are also available from HogWinslow
    https://sites.google.com/site/hogwinslo ... xPG34rG3OY

There are also several communities on line that support the 10E/ER

    - the Shopsmith forum (but then you are here already ;) ) – I find this one has the best search function and you can also use Google to search it, and it has the best format for long, in-depth discussions and restoration threads. Best viewed on a larger screen, desktop, laptop, or tablet.
On a smart phone use the Tapatalk app.

Some of the 10ER specific threads that will be of interest.

    - Mickyd's restoration thread

Chapmanruss's discussion of the evolution of the 10E-ER over the course of their production run.
Shopsmith Model 10's What When and Where

On Facebook – formatted for small screens, poor search function.

    - Shopsmith Digital Motor Conversion

    - Shopsmith Troubleshooting and Tips

There used to be older style email groups on Yahoo Groups for the Shopsmith 10ER and Shopsmith. Due to changes at Yahoo these groups have moved to Groups.IO. The change over was recent so all the old discussions, files, and pictures are not necessarily ported over yet and some were lost forever.

    - Shopsmith Owners and Users Group

I see that SSUG.org is gone now too.

Time will tell dusty. I retired last Friday so I am going to have to find SOMETHING to do with all my time besides vacations, mountain biking, and driving Mrs. Daigle crazy.
