SS Sharpening Jig Platens

I'm kinda new to the forum. Been reading for quite awhile, just now posting a question.
I inherited my late fathers SS 510, along with the Bandsaw, Belt Sander, Strip Sander, and I recently purchased a Jointer off Ebay. One of the many smaller accessories he had for the SS was the Lathe Chisel Sharpening Jig that mounts to the Strip Sander in place of the table.
What I am wondering is...how necessary is it to have the "sharpening platen" for the sander? I cannot find the(at least what looks to be offset in the manual) platen to sharpen lathe chisels. The flat platen is already mounted on the Strip Sander, but that is the only platen I have.
Also, the parts diagram for the Sharpening Jig doesnt show platens. But the packing list shows it came with other platens. Am I to assume that the platens are shown with the Strip Sander parts breakdown? And if so, I dont see the offset platen, just a curved platen.
Any part numbers for the correct platen to sharpen the lathe chisels would help.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Hi jalex7672,

Welcome to these forums! The strip sandercomes with three platens (515395, 515397, 515396), none of which are for use with the 555812 Sander Chisel Sharpening Attachment. The platen that you need comes as part of the 555812. Someone who owns the attachment may have a parts breakdown that shows the correct part number for the platen, or a call to customer service is in order.

The parts list doesn't show the part but they have a listing for a 521881 sharpening plate (not shown) which might be it. The online ordering system does not seem to have that part listed.

You will need to call shopsmith and check on this.

And welcome to the group of active posters!

Yep - You'll have to phone Shopsmith 1-800-543-7586 And verbally order that part. It usually comes as part of the chisel sharpening attachment.
