Misaligned arm locking pin

Recently picked up two shopsmiths in need of repair a 510 & a 500. the 510 is a shop fire survivor and the 500 appears to have led a rough life. I have the 510 up & running thanks a lot to this forum and am now working on the 500.
I noticed that the arm locking pin is misaligned & does not securely hold the way tubes when in vertical position. Nothing appears bent or out of place and I'm not bright enough to find anyway to adjust. Is this just a fault at the time of manufacture or is there a fix short of filling and re drilling the pin receiver?

That is 'normal'! i.e. The way it was intended. The offset of the larger 'bore' provides a tapered surface for the lock screw to press against. This forces the proper 'alignment'.

Looks/sounds weird, but that is the way it is!;)

thanks for the reply... the 510 fit dead center with no wobble. I intended to use the 510 for table saw use & the 500 for lathe & drill press, that is after all the rust, crud, and use is cleaned up.

Strange that the 510 was dead center????

The 'off center' 500 should not 'wobble'. What direction does it wobble?

If there were not conclusions, I'd have nothing to jump at

Put on glasses. the wobble was the way tubes. a quick tighten & no more wobble.

Of the couple dozen some odd used Shopsmiths I bought a scary number of them had loose way tubes. Some did not seem to have ever been tightened at all based on not having any mark in the tube from the setscrew. When examined the setscrews did have the normal sharp edged cup on the end that leaves the little circle cut into the tubes.
I do not have an explanation why. :confused:

FWIW it is the 'cause' of Yuba's demise. They were sued by a customer who was injured while turning when the loose tubes caused the workpiece to fly.

Their marketing literature was full of statements of how 'safe' a tool it was!

One would think that it is a no-brainer to insure the tubes are secured!

Could it be that the hinge pin is an obstruction to 'air guns' thus requiring a long ss tool kit and considerable torque applied to the short arm of the 'tool'? Problems with bi-focals not relevant!:rolleyes:

I just finished lubricating and cleaning the inside of my Mark V, and noticed the same thing on my machine. I am glad that it is normal. What concerns me initially was that even with the set screw (base lock) hand tightened in drill press mode the SS will not lock down. Simple pressure applied to the machine in drill press mode could cause the system to fall from vertical to horizontal. I thought maybe this miss alignment of the depression and base lock was why my SS would not lock down. There is a slight gap on the opposite side of the stand when the set screw is engaged. I thought this set screw (base lock) was supposed to keep the drill press from falling.

I tightened the base lock as tight as I could by hand, it may have had a few more threads left, but could not get it any tighter by hand, and was afraid to put a wrench to it. Do you think it needs a shim? Anyone else have this problem, course understand I am a noob, and this may be a dumb question, but I did not want to damage the machine. Thanks

We need to 'see' yours. It should indeed prevent it falling back to horizontal. The side slop is normal also. Tightening the lock knob should take up that slack.

The off center depression should force the way tubes to just past vertical.

Make sure the lock screw has a tapered end. The part may be wrong if the threads are about to bottom out.
