I am considering changing my motor. My current Leland/Farady 3/4HP motor has bad bearings and makes too much noise. I 'd like to have a reversible or variable speed motor. I'd like your opinions on these picks:

Are you considering an upgrade because you need or want to upgrade? Don't answer that...that is not the point.

Can you cure the noise problem by changing out the bad bearings? Normally you can. You might even be able to make the motor reversible.

Of course, these might be options that you really do not want to consider. Your choice.

You can send me your old motor if you just want to get it out of your way.

I have a 1 HP TEH / AOM motor with specs just like the third one you list that I have saved to put on my 10-ER. I bought it originally for a grain auger that unloaded grain from the bottom center of bins and so it had to be dust tight. I haven't looked at it lately but I suspect it is reversible (with a proper reversing switch.
As for variable speed I had thought of using a single variable speed pulley adjusted by a movable motor base like the one shown as a cut-away near the bottom of this page and then retain the upper cone pulley for more variation.

I have one of those pulleys but I doubt it is the size I need (that would be too easy).

Remember, the folks at Shopsmith didn't invent variable speed, they just applied it well. There are all manner of variable speed drives out there. A professional mill-work shop friend that builds a lot of his own equipment has several pieces running with riding lawnmower transmissions used to change speeds. They serve him well.

I have brought several motors from http://www.surpluscenter.com I find their new enclosed 110/220 VAC motor is the cheapest that I have found. I like this one: http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?U ... e=electric

I find that sometimes I have to relocate the capacitor and its housing to the side of the motor regardless of where I buy the motor. Connecting a FWD/REV switch is not hard to do. I like to use the 220 VAC hookup whenever possible.

I hope to have several DC motors and controllers packages available for the 10ER later this year if I ever get my shop reorganized to where I can find and test them. Contact me off-line if any questions. Thanks.

Having just replaced a motor, I would try to replace with a totally enclosed motor, With the vents lying just under the arbor, you may have problems with the vents sucking sawdust. Then your new motor will hum and possibly have issues

I don't mind the humming if it is a nice tune...

I would repair it if that is an option. But I want more power & reversible.
