NEW Milwaukee sprayer.

Post by cincinnati »

Home Depot now offers this new airless paint sprayer. What may be interesting to us woodworkers it's also a HVLP unit.
Right now there is a $100 rebate till the end of the month. $279 is a good price.
I have no experience with this unit but thought I would offer this info to the group for review.

I think the ad men got a little carried away on this one.
Airless and HVLP is contradictory terms.

Paint to spray must be vaporized there is many ways to do this.
Squit it through a high pressure point where it is so constricted it literally explodes into vapor as it passes the restriction. This is accomplished two ways, One using high air pressure to force the paint through, this is know as high pressure air spraying. Or two by actually compressing the paint to force it through, this is known airless spraying.

Another method to vaporize paint is to pick it up with air, this is accomplished by using a High Volume of Air at Low pressure to carry droplets of paint on to the intended surface to be painted.

An example of combination of airless and HVLP would be a kid's squirt pistol. It carries a high volume of water airlessly.

I think the ad should read Airless paint sprayer. If it is in fact also Hvlp I don't think it would be very useful for fine workworking.

Airless/HVLP

Post by claimdude »

Ed,

You might want to take a closer look at the product description. My initial thought was like yours but after closesr inspection it looks like it is a dual machine. The description says it includes a 2 stage turbine for HVLP. A look at the photos shows HVLP clearly printed on the front of the machine.

"The new Milwaukee Airless / Fine Finish Paint Sprayer offers superior performance in innovation, durability, power and ergonomics. With the unique ability to offer airless spraying and high volume low pressure (HVLP) fine finish spraying, this unit is in a class of its own. In airless mode, the 3000 PSI piston pump maintains pressure as needed for a variety of materials including unthinned latex. Finish Spray Technology allows the 2-Stage turbine blower to provide the perfect finish. With included Dual-Action Airless/Fine Finish Pistol-Grip Sprayer you can easily switch between airless and fine finish applications. This pistol-grip sprayer is equipped with a 619 and 310 reversible spray tip and also accepts standard spray tips. The Milwaukee Airless/Fine Finish Paint Sprayer base and included container lid are compatible with a five gallon paint bucket that is easily transported over rugged terrain. The M4910-20 includes a 2 year limited warranty.

Can be used as an airless sprayer or an HVLP Fine Finish Sprayer

The first link didn't include any description as such. I have since went to the second link and watched the movie.
I now see what they are doing. The gun has two ports. The smaller front is for airless operation the back larger port is for HVLP operations. Apparently in HVLP mode the airless port becomes a low pressure supply line.
So in effect you are getting two sprayers in one. One a 3000PSI airless compressor and spray gun and the other is a twin turbine HVLP unit. The selling price of this one unit is about the same as buying either unit a year ago.

I think we are finally seeing the realization of the economy starting to hit the tool market. If this thing is half as good as ad says it is, it will impact both the airless market (Graco and Wagner both at the low end) and two or three of the HVLP units. In fact if I was any of these companies I would be real worried now that this is on the market.

The only down side is the need to have two hoses for HVLP mode which could be cumbersome in fine finishing and a compromise gun. How well Milwaukee managed the compromise will make or break the deal.

WHo knows I might even break down and buy one since I have longed for a new HVLP and could justify not renting an airless anymore.
