Possible Restoration

Greetings all, new person here.

I've been lusting over a Shopsmith for years, since the first time I saw a live demonstration at a local hardware store, a long time ago.

Well it looks like I'm very close to getting one. I desperately need one now as we moved a long ways last year and I sold all my large tools and since I don't want to (nor do I have the money) to replace them I'm going to get a Shopsmith. I need something compact and I'm not going to open a cabinet shop, so Shopsmith here I come!

Anyway, all that to say I found this on Craigslist

It's cheap, $250 if I go an get it and haul it home. (not a problem)

My questions are these:

What's missing? I know it doesn't have any saw blades so does it appear to be missing everything for sawing?

What will I need to get it cutting again?

I realize this isn't the best picture and such but I'm looking for a general idea of what I'm getting myself into.

Hey Dan - Without more info about what the machine has, or what condition it is in personally I'd be looking on eBay. There have recently been some good looking ones with lots of accessories for under $200.

Just from the pic, your missing a lot. Disk sander, lathe tools, headstock center, tail stock center, upper & lower saw guard, brad point bits and miter gauge. To name a few.

It is a 1950's model with a smaller 3/4HP motor.(they did not come with brad point bits then:rolleyes:)

Thanks for the input friends.

I did some searching and I came to the same conclusion you all have pointed me to; a lot missing, and could be a bit cheaper because of the need for many parts.

The good news is that with some more searching I found one close to home that was made in the 90's and has all the original equipment as well as a bandsaw, all for $900!

Which model from the 90's? $900 may be a bit high(depends on model and condition, and whatever else 'extra' comes with it)!

I'm trying to get a serial number.

The photos show the machine in excellent condition, little use.

The photos also show it comes with everything standard as well as a complete bandsaw. This seems to be a good value to me.

And what might seem expensive somewhere else might be a fair price here, just a smaller market, less available.

Reverend Dan,

I know I've seen that picture before. Where are you located? I don't mean to rain on your parade, but for that price I would expect the Mark 5 to be a 510. I think that is about $300 too much for the standard table system.

It does indeed appear to be complete! Annnnnd a bandsaw, what appears to be a 6" belt sander and something else I cannot make out on the left.

If the SPT's are in as good condition as the Mark V appears, you are looking at a reasonable price.
