I didn't see an intro page, so I figured I'd post one here. I just picked up a Shopsmith and am looking forward to getting it up and running. It's an older model, but I think I got a decent deal. Needs some cleaning and lubing but I'm hoping it will be a good piece.

I've read over some of the maintenance tips, but if anybody has any 'first time' tips or suggestions I'd be happy to read them.

And let me know what you think... I picked up a Greenie (as I've seen them called) with a serial number starting 360, so it's a Dec '59 model if I read that right. Came with a few accessories: Yuba bandsaw, Magna Jointer, Magna Jigsaw, Magna Belt sander, and some blades and sanding tubes. I've also got some pieces/parts that I don't know what they are, so I'm sure I'll have some questions.

Picked it all up for $500. Was that a steal, about average, or did I get taken? No worries about my 'feelings', I'd just like some honest opinions. All the Magna stuff is gold but I'm assuming its all compatible. Hopefully it's not a lower quality knockoff.

I'm fairly new to woodworking but am hoping to get in lots of practice.

Sounds like a pretty fair deal to me. Congrats. Go through the Sawdust sessions that discuss how to breakdown, inspect, lube, and maintain your machine.

OK, here it is....

Turns out it's a Dec. 1959 model, according to the serial number.

I spent today cleaning things up and putting it together. The bandsaw needs some rubber on the wheels, but everything else runs like a top.

As shown, with the rip fence, second rip fence, table end, and the Magna jointer. In the "accessories" picture there is the bandsaw (Yuba), the jigsaw (Magna), the wide belt sander (Magna) and a few lathe pieces. It also came with some drum sander stuff and some stuff I can't identify. Some is home built and some is factory. I'll post pictures of those later and see if we can figure out what their for.

I don't know about the market you are in, but in my area getting a unit with all the additional tools for only $500 would be almost considered grand theft! I got my '55 with only the bandsaw (and no power coupling) for $400 and was lucky at that.
Take the advice of these guys and watch the Sawdust Sessions and read up. I'm in the process of tearing mine completely down and cleaning it all up before putting it back together and their help has been immeasurable.

That's a good buy, CLJ! I've been watching Ebay for about a month trying to buy a belt sander. They seem to go for $150-200 by themselves!

I agree, on your find, great job and welcome to the group. Just be careful these machines have a way of multiplying over and over again.

As you can see we all seem to think you got a pretty good deal.

On the apparent new second topic here, "how I got my belt sander", I bought, restored and sold a '58 greenie to get mine along with a planer and a universal lathe tool rest.

Not only did you get a bargain(IMHO), you also got one that appears to be in very good condition. All those Goldie colored SPTs are younger than the Greenie.

Two advice type comments:
1) Do not turn the speed dial unless the spindles are rotating.

2) Do lubrication throughout b4 using extensively.
