My first pistol presentation box. First time working with Mesquite.
Top panel is what is colloquially referred to as "Cat's Claw" Mesquite.
The box is for my DIL.
Mesquite, Walnut and Turquoise.
Third pic seems a little washed out. Got the camera and a decoder ring for box tops.

Wow. I want a lesson in how to do the turquiose inlays. Beautiful.

That kind of inlay is easy. Start with wood with lots of negative spaces. Grind up some turquoise and pour it in the holes. Add epoxy and sand like He**.

I wondered if that is what you did. I saw a youtube video I think where a guy did that when a turned bowl or plate cracked. It looks great. Is it difficult to keep from sanding into the wood and making it uneven? I manage to pull that off even then I am just sanding a hard spot in wood.

The epoxy and inclusions are belt sanded down with 80 grit. It's fairly easy to see where to stop. My fingers do a better job of determining that than these old eyes.

One fine looking box with "Character" I like the combination of the woods and thanks for sharing how you did the inlay. Blue Ribbon for sure.

Beautiful box, Gene!! Excellent craftsmanship! I love the sawn off top that brings the grain flow of lid and box side together. Also very nice job of finishing!!!

Geez! - never did have a decoder ring.... My decoder was a badge. Think it took a dime and a box top got it. Jack Armstrong, I think!
