I have been looking for another Mark V to use as my main machine so I can turn my first one into a mini or shorty. Last weekend I found it! I bought a Mark V 500 and a bandsaw on a power station, and it also came with a 510 table upgrade. It was an ebay auction, so I figured I was taking a chance on the condition. I intended to completely tear down the new machine to make it shine, but as I got into it, I realized that it was almost like new! Also, the 510 upgrade seems to be complete and appears to have never been on the machine. I think it was used only as a table saw, then sat for a long time. I tore the headstock down most of the way to get everything cleaned up, lubed and waxed and now have it back together. Here are some pics of the Mark V.

Back side with newer access plate. My old one has spring clips. I think I like the old style better, because I would constantly bump the new one and it would fall down...

I think that rusty spot is where the serial number sticker is supposed to be Does anyone have an idea of the age of this machine?

Here are the new bandsaw and power station. I had just finished restoring my old bandsaw, but this one came with the table upgrade and fence. I figure I can mix and match parts to make one. I'm not sure yet if I want to keep both bandsaws. I also don't know if I am going to keep the power station. I had told my wife that I didn't really need it and could recoup some of my costs. We will see how that goes.

Does anyone know if the miter gauge in this picture is Shopsmith issue? I would be surprised if it is, because the quality just isn't there. It fits in the miter slot, but does not seem right. Also, was the fence rail put on backwards? It seems pretty awkward to lock the fence down from the back side of the table.

Does anyone know where I can find instructions for the 510 table upgrade? Does Shopsmith sell a manual that is just for the 510 table system? I would like to make sure that I am assembling and aligning everything properly.

I will probably have some more questions as I keep going through everything. I was really happy with this purchase, as it exceeded my expectations and I got a few things that I was going to look for anyway. I had not used my Mark V much as a table saw because of the small table and I did not have any of the saw guards. I am looking forward to putting the new one to use.

In your final picture above, the square black plate with the slot in it looks like a table for a 4x6 metal cutting bandsaw when used in vertical mode. Look here for example to see the saw ( I searched but did not find a pic of the table itself):

I think the table is about 8 or 10 inches square.

Sell the 'extra' bandsaw, keep the power station!!

Thanks for the responses on the mystery parts. I found that the manual that came with this Mark V does have a 510 section that goes through everything I should need for alignment. Hopefully I will get some shop time this weekend to work on that.

There appears to be a lower saw guard cover and a upper saw guard for the model 500. They can't be used on the 510, but wopuld be a nice upgrade for a model 500. You have a type "C" headstock which will bring your Shopsmith up to at least '92.

I agree, keep the power station.

I may have the only dissenting view on the bandsaw here. I have two. Normally, I keep a 3/4" blade on one to resaw wood and the other one normally has a small blade for cutting curves and small cars. This saves me time is finding, identifying the correct blade and changing them out. I can most times just change to the bandsaw with the blade loaded, then tension the blade and set up. But, this is just MHO.

Actually, I am seriously considering keeping both bandsaws for that reason. Before I got my first Mark V, I started out with a small Craftsman bandsaw (1/4" blades only). I figured I would either keep both SS bandsaws or one SS bandsaw and the Craftsman. I will probably keep the SS ones since they have a higher capacity and take less space.

I took the time today to go through most of the alignment procedures for the 510 system. I think I only have the floating tables to go before I am ready to start woodworking again.
