Jointer cutterhead screw question

Does anyone know the size of the screws that hold the wedges in the jointer cutterhead? I replaced the bearings and blades recently, and there is one screw that does not want to go in. I found a couple of dings in the screw's threads, so I went out to match it up and get a new one. I was really surprised that the screw I brought would only fit a 5mm nut... That would be the first metric screw that I found on the SS equipment.

Anyway, I bought a couple of them and tried to put the new screw in, but it doesn't want to go in any easier than the original screw. If it is cross threading, I don't want to wreck the cutterhead. Before I go out and buy a tap, I want to verify the screw size. I would appreciate any input.

TIA,

Loren

If you do not find a screw locally that fits, let me know. PM me your mailing address and I'll send you a screw. I bent the shaft on a cutter head trying to do a bearing replacement without the correct tools. About the only thing I salvaged was the wedges and screws. Oh ya. I saved a set of blades too -that have not yet been sharpened.

I just finished running one of the screws through a die and I believe the screw is a 10-32NF and it is 1" long. I did not use any tools other than my fingers and the screw was difficult to screw into the die but I did it without any evidence of cutting threads.:)

Finding same with a hex head may be the problem unless you have a good hardware store or access to a machine shop.

Thank you, Dusty. I appreciate you taking the time to check it out. I will go back and get a 10-32 screw to try, and if that doesn't work, I will try cleaning it out with a tap. I will post back when I have it figured out.

If yer gonna look for a screw, it needs to be 3/4" long. The length is measured from the bottom of the head.

Thus look for: a "10-32 x 3/4 hex socket cap screw". Overall length will be about 1".

Didja like that MickyD? - Did I leave something out?

The screws that came from my defunct cutter head are 1" long thread plus the hex head.

It feels as though there might be some doubt.

Yup. At least a 1/4". Every little bit counts.

Be careful with that tap. If you can do this with finger strength it would be safer.

You really do not want to screw up those threads. A cutterhead is very expensive - especially when you need to buy one because of a mistake.
