Man - O - Man! My fingers are crossed hoping you get that contract! That would make a super how and tell project! Very nice design job! But be careful - he might want diamond shaped glass!

Thanks Tom I can usually figure it out but still takes a while on some things. Thats ok with me that is the way I learned woodworking, by making every mistake possible!

It has taken a while on this project. The homeowner had to get a carpenter involved to build a wall, an electrician to move some electrical and also had someone install marble for the hearth and surround. I am about ready to start the construction of the mantle. I will be working it around some other jobs so there may be some time gaps so just bare with me. I have some pictures from the job sight that I will post as soon as I have time to dump my camera.

I like to start a mantle project by building the breast plate first. It may be Thursday before I have time to work on this.

I have added a couple of measurements to our breast plate in order to create a cut list. Although Tom has been gracious enough to help me with the Sketchup cut list plug in I have determined that for a lot of things it just is not worth my investment of time to draw into enough detail to use it. For this breast plate we will use the method I have used for years based on simple arithmetic.

I have pre determined that the rails should be 7/8" longer than the opening and the panels 1/2" longer and wider. All rails and styles should finish 2 1/2" with the exception of the top rail. My rail cutter will remove a total of 1/8" from the length of the rails when run, and the style cutter 1/16" leaving 1/4" free space for the panel to float.


Our styles are: 2@ 2 9/16" x 12 5/8" ( the style and rail cutters remove 1/16" per pass)

Our top rail is: 1@ 5 7/16" x 43 3/8"

Our center rails are: 2@ 2 5/8" x 5 5/8"

Our bottom rail is: 1@ 2 9/16" x 43 3/8

Our panels are: 2@ 5 1/4" x 9 7/8" 1 @ 5 1/4" x 19 1/4"






I hope to start making sawdust soon on this project but have to go change out a back door for a customer today. Not work that I go after but she is a long time customer an I don't know how to say No!
