Link to a post on rebuilding and testing the clutch in the Gilmer drive sleeve.

I cleaned mine up using that post. My suspicion is that it would be more for the clutch to freeze up due to rust than to slip excessivly, but I have been wrong before.
You could also try adjusting the Gilmer belt tension,

What has to be done to convert? I assume
replace idler shaft, belt and drive shaft.
replace idler shaft, belt and drive shaft.

If you upgrade to Poly-V you also need a quill. The splines are different. It ends up being a bit spendy.not2shabby wrote: ↑Sat May 28, 2022 4:27 pm I got things apart. The motor runs perfectly fine with the gilmer belt and drive removed. I think the drive sleeve is the issue, but the two bearings on the outside are smooth. I don’t fully understand the function, but I think the toothed part of the drive sleeve that the gilmer belt rides on is slipping on the shaft which I imagine is creating a ton of heat and then seizing up the shaft.
Is that possible? Should I take this opportunity to upgrade to the poly v shiv and drive sleeve?
Seems at least equally likely to me that one or more of the ball bearings, drive sleeve or quill, is hard to turn and causing the clutch to slip.(?) I know a slipping clutch will generate heat, but having a hard time picturing it generating enough heat to cause the bearings to seize.

I think the POLY V upgrade package was just added. I looked for it before sometime but just saw it the other day in the Shopsmith 2022 catalog with headline

Re: How hot is hot?
Did a little research and found that there’s a clutch inside the drive sleeve. I’ll probably find a replacement on eBay, if possible

Many thoughts from people here. Some are off the mark. In your original post you said the machine starts and runs and after a while it stops and hums. If it runs in the beginning that eliminates the start capacitor and start switch. They are only used to start the motor. If the motor does not start but just hums when turned on than those are things to look at. That is not your case. The motor runs fine by its self.not2shabby wrote: ↑Sat May 28, 2022 7:11 pm Did a little research and found that there’s a clutch inside the drive sleeve. The Gilmer clutch slipping is not the issue either. If the Gilmer clutch was slipping the motor would still turn (not hum) but the quill would not turn.
Since everything is fine for a period of time I would bet on a bad bearing/s. Runs when cool, heats up after a period of time and a bearing seizes stopping the motor (hum).
