I just picked up a mark 5 this weekend. Everything is in good working order. I just lubed it. It runs strong and true as far as I can tell, but at higher speeds it really starts whining. Is this normal. I haven't even taken it up to routing speed yet. It seems solid, but sounds like it is about to go airborne. I would compare it to riding a moped at about 120 mph. Is this normal?

Wait for gurus to chime in on the whining. My guess is you have an issue.....maybe bearings, maybe drive belt. If so, no biggie. Easy enough to change.

Welcome to our merry band of woodworkers! Don't be afraid of asking questions- there's no such thing as a "dumb" question. We've all been there! Also, don't forget to include your location; there may be a forum member close by to help.

If everything is running well, the higher speed settings doesn't necessarily means there is a problem. The headstock will be warm to the to the touch. My headstock is in great shape and makes the same sound you describe. When I run my headstock and the dust collector at the same time I always wear hearing protection.

Welcome. Your will find a great group on people here. My SS is also louder at high speed. I am not near as knowledgeable as many of the other members are on the mechanics of the SS. I have the 2 maintenance DVDs from Shopsmith and I check equipment and settings every few weeks. I have not had any problems over the years.

Watch a few of the Sawdust sessions and see if yours sound much different than the ones in the videos.

BTW, a strange browser thing. In Chrome, I get a list including descriptions of all the videos. In IE, I only get a list of the editions, and have to click on the link to open the respective table of contents.
