Floating Sheave Spring Retaining Ring

I am having a devil of a time getting the floating sheave spring retaining ring on my greenie to stay on. It's so misshapen now that I'll have to replace it. It there a trick to putting it on correctly? Has anyone used anything other than the ring to hold the spring on?

Do you have the roll pin in place in the end of the sheave that the spring snaps into? If not, it would be difficult to keep the spring in place.

I think we are talking about two different things. The spring I was refering to is the big spring on the motor shaft. The ring I was asking about keeps the spring on the shaft.

Sounds like the C-Ring is bad or the groove it fits in is wornen.

Has the c-clip become too 'open'? It should be snug in the groove on the shaft. You MAY be able to close it by carefully squeezing it. That would be a temporary fix. A new clip would be indicated.

The greenie has a ring rather than a clip. The attached is what an abused retaining ring looks like.
Is part #501645 a ring or a clip? It appears in the online exploded diagrams to be a ring. I think that a clip would be easier to install.

In either event, after looking at that pix, I would get a new one. I have not encountered any thing but a clip. External tab or a c-clip should work. About 1/2" nominal. The external tab would be better(maybe they are more accurately called a retaining ring).
I do not recall ever encountering that type spiral ring on the motor shaft.

Thanks guys. I'll get a snap ring on the way home. At one time there was a page on this website that broke down the seial numbers by month. I couldn't find it, but if I remeber correctly 309753 was September, '55. I suppose my father-in-law could have replaced the snap ring with the spiral ring, but I doubt it.

It had to be there! I had a bit of difficulty locating it - but - finally. There have been some major changes to the web site. It'll take months to feel comfortable with it again.
