I also am refurbishing a old Greenie Magna jointer that I have had for awhile. The bearing seem a little noisy. I thought I would replace them while I had it apart. They appear to be the same as the ones on my newer one. Is this possible? The bearing have the lettering Made in USA ND 77R8. Is this enough information to take to the parts house? Does anyone have any other numbers for other manufactors?

Hi;
I haven't checked my listings yet but I think that the "ND" on the bearing is most probably New Departure. An old non Chinese manufacturer.
Try VXB bearings on the internet for a match to the number. It may be necessary to measure the bearing to obtain a match.

The folks at the "Old Woodworking Machines" forum recommended Accurate Bearing Company to me. I get a set of hard to find bearings for my old Craftsman jointer from them. Super fast shipping and great pricing.
You can call them toll Free 800-323-6548. Give them a call, talk with Lynne, and let her know it's for an old woodworking machine.

Found it!! Accurate Bearings has a 77R8 bearing crossed to their part number R8ZZ.
ID = .5000"
OD = 1.125"
width = .3125"
I haven't looked at my jointer yet but the sizes sound about right.

No first hand experience here, but for some reason(unknown to me) ss strongly discourages third party bearing replacement. However folks have done it.
Mentioned only so you be aware. It is possible that the shafts are super tight press fit.
I would not attempt this without a bearing puller/installer. HF has one!:)

Interesting, I have done a number of jointers and I don't think that the bearing fit is any tighter than say drive sleeve bearings. It might be because you have to remove the bearing housing before you can remove the bearing. Though often the bearings slide right out of the housings.

I do not understand it either, but come to think about it, ss does not endorse customer replacement of any major bearing. They only make them available as part of an assembly.
Perhaps the jointer is not actually unique in this respect.
Thanks Guys!

I am going to give Accurate Bearing Co a call Tomorrow. You talked about SS only wanting to sell it as a assy. But if you look in there catalog under the jointer parts list,they list the bearing separate. PN 502898 an it shows limited quantity on there web site. My past experience on limited quantity is about a 6 month wait. $9.48ea. This is for a current jointer and they may be different. That goes back to my first post.Are they the same?

I stand corrected! It is the cutter head that they do not sell separately!
They
probably are the same. If yer getting the same bearing from abc as is there now, what does it matter? Yeah I know, Future reference or current alternatives( I just looked at abc site, no prices!).
Let us know what they quoted/shipping.

A few days ago I purchased a set of R8ZZ bearings for the jointer at a local bearing supply shop. They cost me $13.79 each. Had I known the price before going there, I likely would have ordered some from an on-line supplier. They are Swiss-made bearings, so I guess they're a good quality set. I've not installed them yet as I still have to clean up the rust on the jointer that I picked up with the Mark VII.
